Build a Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin doesn’t necessarily need more products. It usually needs a more thoughtful routine.

If your skin is sensitive, the answer isn't always another product.

Sometimes your skin is just asking you to stop doing so much.

More acids. More exfoliating. More actives. A new product every other week because somebody on TikTok said it changed their life. Meanwhile, your skin is like, Can you please leave me alone?

I am a big believer in listening to your skin. If it's suddenly feeling tight, dry, irritated or just not like itself, that's usually my cue to simplify things.

So let's talk about how to build a skincare routine for sensitive skin that actually feels good, and doesn't require twelve products to get there.

Born of Four skincare products for a hydrating skincare routine

First: sensitive or just sensitized?

There's a difference.

Some people naturally have sensitive skin. Their skin has always been more likely to react, get red, sting or become uncomfortable.

But sometimes skin becomes sensitized.

Maybe you've been exfoliating too much. Maybe you introduced several new products at once. Maybe the weather changed. Maybe you used something your skin simply did not like.

And sometimes you won't know exactly what caused it. That's okay.

You don't have to solve the mystery before you start being gentle with your skin.

When my skin is unhappy, my first instinct isn't to throw another active at it. It's to pull back and support it.

Start with your cleanser

I don't want my face to feel squeaky clean.

Ever.

That super-tight feeling after cleansing isn't something I personally associate with a good cleanse. I want my skin clean, obviously, but I still want it to feel like skin when I'm done.

Your cleanser needs to remove the day: sunscreen, makeup, excess oil, dirt, without making your face feel like you need to run for moisturizer the second you rinse it.

On days when you're wearing makeup or heavier sunscreen, you may want to double cleanse.

An oil cleanser first to break everything down, followed by a gentle cleanser to finish.

And on days when you don't need all that? One cleanse may be plenty.

Coming to BOF soon: The Melt Transforming Cleansing Oil + The Cloud Soft Foaming Cleanser. I made them because I wanted the cleansing step to feel just as good as the rest of the Ritual.

Then, give your skin some water

This is a big one. Dry skin and dehydrated skin aren't the same thing.

Dry skin needs oil. Dehydrated skin needs water.

And your skin can absolutely be dealing with both at the same time.

That's one reason I love starting the BOF Ritual with Essence Veil Mist.

It's not just something that smells nice that we spray on our faces. It's our first layer of hydration.

I formulated it with ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, ectoin, beta-glucan, aloe and colloidal oat because I wanted that first step to immediately make skin feel comfortable and hydrated.

Mist. Press it in. Then move on to your serum.

Simple.

You don't have to be afraid of actives

Sensitive skin doesn't mean you're sentenced to bland skincare forever.

But you probably don't need all the actives, all at once.

This is where people can get themselves into trouble.

New acid Monday. Retinol Tuesday. Exfoliating mask Wednesday. Then by Friday we're wondering why everything burns.

Introduce things slowly.

Give your skin time to tell you whether it likes something before adding something else.

This is also why I prefer formulas where ingredients are designed to work together instead of chasing whatever ingredient is trending that week.

Our Skin Radiance Serum, for example, has niacinamide, panthenol, ectoin, beta-glucan, sodium PCA and other hydrating and conditioning ingredients.

The goal isn't to beat your skin into submission.

We want hydrated, smooth, healthy-looking, radiant skin, and we can get there without making skincare feel like warfare.

Your barrier matters. A lot.

If you've been around BOF for five minutes, you've probably heard me talk about the skin barrier.

There's a reason. Your barrier helps keep the good stuff, like moisture, in and helps protect your skin from the outside world.

When it's struggling, your skin can start feeling tight, dry, flaky or much more reactive than usual.

This is exactly why I created Barrier Repair Cream.

I didn't want just another moisturizer that made your skin feel nice for twenty minutes.

I wanted hydration, nourishment and that cushioned feeling my own skin was missing.

And this is also why I'm constantly telling you:

Don't wait until your skin is screaming before you start taking care of your barrier.

Barrier care isn't an emergency treatment. It should be part of the routine.

And yes, I love a face oil

You knew this was coming. Especially if your skin tends to feel dry again a few hours after you've done your routine.

Here's the important part:

Oil doesn't replace hydration.

That's why I don't start my Ritual with oil.

First we hydrate. Then serum. Then moisturizer. Then I like to seal everything in with a few drops of

Warm it between your hands and press it into your skin.

That's it.

And when my skin wants something richer, especially at night, that's when Restoration Balm comes out.

A Simple Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

You do not need 14 steps.

Morning:Gentle cleanse if needed → Essence → Serum → Cream → Face Oil if you want it → SPF (please girl, buy and apply the sunscreen)

Evening:Cleanse → Essence → Serum → Cream → Face Oil or Balm

And if your skin is really irritated?

Simplify even more.

Your skin doesn't care how impressive your bathroom shelf looks.

A few things I would NOT do when my skin is freaking out

  • I wouldn't scrub it.

  • I wouldn't use super-hot water.

  • I wouldn't introduce three new products.

  • I wouldn't keep applying something that consistently burns or stings because I think that means it's “working.”

And I definitely wouldn't exfoliate harder because my skin feels rough.

Sometimes rough, flaky skin needs comfort, not another round of exfoliation.

Give it a minute.

Sensitive Skin FAQs

Can I use niacinamide if I have sensitive skin?

Possibly, yes. Plenty of people with sensitive skin use niacinamide comfortably. But your skin is your skin. Concentration and the overall formula matter, too.

Introduce it gradually and see how your skin responds.

Can sensitive skin exfoliate?

Yes, depending on your skin and the product.

But if your face is already irritated, burning, stinging or feeling raw, that's probably not when I'd reach for an exfoliant.

Get your skin comfortable first.

What about face oils?

I love them, especially for skin that tends to feel dry or depleted.

But remember: oil and hydration aren't the same thing.

Give your skin water first. Then use your oil as the beautiful finishing step.

How do I know if I'm doing too much?

Your skin will usually tell you.

Suddenly everything stings. You're unusually dry. You're flaky.

Your skin feels tight even though you're piling products on it.

That's when I'd simplify. You can always add things back later.

The biggest thing I want you to remember

You don't need a perfect skincare routine.

And you definitely don't need to chase every new ingredient or trend.

  • Learn your skin.

  • Pay attention to what it's telling you.

  • Give it water. Give it moisture. Support your barrier. Be thoughtful about your actives.

  • And then be consistent.

That's really what The Ritual has always been about for me.

A few products. A few minutes.

Not because skincare needs to take over your life, but because taking a little time to care for yourself should be part of it.

That's your ritual.
